But let's take your proposition that we get to 2050 with no indication of being on the path of recovery - what will have been lost compared with doing nothing and the poisoning of OUR environment increasing day by day and the situation being very much worse. Which will be the worst state to be in? I'd much rather having tried to do something and faced a bit of loss of standard of living than having done nothing and be facing mass extinction because we really ARE facing mass extinction if we continue as we are.

To be serious it's television that's more likely to tip off intelligent life and it's about now that we might expect a reply.
High power high frequency radio transmissions started in the 50's. That means that the broadcasts might have been detected anywhere in a radius of 25 light years from us and been responded to.
It's quite possible radar transmissions might have been detected before the 50's and have been followed to their source.
But planetary global warming --- well nothing should ever be ruled out, just assigned degrees of probability eh!
