Can you believe this! Poor woman.
I would love to downsize but can't afford to.
The costs involved with selling my house and buying something smaller will be around £8,000 , that is quite a chunk off my purchase money.

Small houses with a maximum of 2 bedrooms are not easy to find and those that are available tend to be expensive cottages.
It would be nice if the government made some concessions to the elderly who are downsizing like removing stamp duty on purchases.

I keep looking in the hope that something small and affordable will come along.

Re: Where will people live in the future?

There is also another side to the story . I know of a lady who lives alone in a 3 bed social housing property . She has been offered a lovely one bed bungalow , they offered to move her free of charge and help her in any way . She has lived there alone 20 yrs since her 2 sons left. She retired at 60 because she gets pension credits , pays no rent or council tax . She says the house was given to her for life and she's staying .

The bungalow is in the same area with garden too.

The 3 bed house could house 6 people easily .

Now I own my own house now , it's a small 2 bed terrace. If I downsize to a one bed or a flat it's gonna cost me to buy and sell , but one day I may have to , and I will do.

I think there are quite a few older folk living in large housing association properties that could move and downsize especially with the help offered .

Well there is the proof I needed LOL why should a socially housed person love their home less than a home owner ?

Hi

Too many failed initiatives and not enough action.

Re: Where will people live in the future?

I agree with Julie on this because when you have lived in a house for a while it becomes your home, whether you buy or rent it. I have a large farmhouse where I live by myself and I am intending to downsize because it is now to big for me to look after, but I will still be upset when I have to leave it.

A lot of problems are that too many people marry and have children without giving any thought as to how they will house them. They then split up and both parents need a house with adequate bedrooms for when the kids sleep at their home. People should work harder at maintaining a marriage, where they have children, or not have children till they are sure the relationship will work.

Shipping container homes? Some of those might be OK for single people or couples. Two or more could be welded together for families.

Well said Patsy. Our local council had a massive pot of money from this, and was not allowed to build more social housing. Damn right I blame Margaret Thatcher.

But round here it's not the cost of the house that is the problem it's the land, when we sold my MILs house we got more for the land it stood on than the house it's self was worth. House £40,000 v land £260,000 we obviously sold the land and the house was demolished !

Where will we live in the future? On top of each other, same as we do now !!
Wasn't the bedroom tax brought in for this purpose? A 3bed home should have a family occupying it not a single elderly lady. Can't force 'em out though...

Re: Where will people live in the future?

I'm apalled to see acres and acres of green land being gobbled up for 'Jerry built' modern housing while acres of brown field land lies vacant.

I would not allow one more bit of green field land to be built on until every scrap of suitable brown field land had been used and every derelict house had been restored or replaced.
