Once hunted to near extinction, in the 1800's, the American Bison is now a protected species and vast herds roam the American west.
A full grown bull averages a ton in weight and can run at 40 mph. (65 kph)
The bison is a rather bad tempered creature and it is wise to keep your distance.
No matter how many times people are told to beware of the danger, there are always fools who think of them as tame cattle and every year tourists are injured or killed.
Bakerman - are the First Nation Tribes still allowed to hunt them? Bison used to be a staple food for them.
To the best of my knowledge, the answer is, yes. The same applies to Alaskan tribes who are allowed to hunt whales. I believe there is a limit, however.
