The Problem with the Civil Service.
Hi
I was one, so can comment from the inside.
It is a Club, much like Politics.
You need to go to the right school and University, you need to be part of the system.
You need to say the right things to your Political Masters.
They have big egos which they do not like deflating.
There is no attempt at efficiency.
One glorious example is pay grades.
I have no contacts and was definitely not part of the right set.
My first promotion was to Principal Officer Grade 1.
I was quite happy in my small office with a formica desk , one set of drawers and a swivel chair with no arms.
Nope, it was changed straight away.
I got a bigger desk, real wood and a new chair with arms.
I didn't want it, but had no choice.
That is the system.
It is bananas.
It gets worse as you get further up..
It is a complete nonsense.
60% of your pay is related to the number of people who work for you.
There is no incentive to make things more efficient.
It is a dinosaur, you would not believe how much trouble I got into by suggesting there was no need to swan off to Brussels once a week for a meeting.
It could have been done over the internet.
