Supertrawlers

All this allowed under EU?

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-b1770356.html

Supertrawlers are industrial vessels more than 100-metres long with nets measuring up to a mile, which catch hundreds of tonnes of fish a day. Their bycatch includes dolphins, porpoises and seals.

Marine wildlife monitors say the vessels are destroying fish stocks, killing non-target species, harming sustainable fishing communities and destroying marine ecosystems.

Well your link says "The fleet, mostly Dutch" and they are in what are still EU waters, so that would suggest that yes the EU does allow this.

Re: Supertrawlers

After the first of January we should sink the buggers if they stray into British waters. We could dress the navy ship up to look like a Greenpeace vessel to avoid backlash....

Re: Supertrawlers

I have a feeling that the majority of EU fishing boats will abide by the legal requirements.

However, it is more than likely that there will be a few trying their luck. From what I understand, our initial reaction will be to stop them, empty their nets, tell them they're naughty boys and send them home.

Predictably, that will have little effect.

I sincerely hope that after they have taken advantage of our Britishness for a time, we will eventually become rather more serious and arrest them, take them to our nearest port and imprison them.
They should then lose their vessel and pay a large fine before we release them.

Re: Supertrawlers

Supertrawlers were banned from fishing in Australian waters in 2012(ish) to protect our fisheries.

All fishing in Australian waters is subject to a quota to prevent overfishing.

EU duplicity again.

https://www.dw.com/en/fishing-the-la...ies/a-42307350

Campaigners say EU politicians under pressure from industry routinely agree to unsustainable fishing quotas, against scientific advice. But fishermen warn big cuts to fish quotas will put thousands of jobs at risk.
Jobs will be lost when there are not enough fish to make a profit. This farce is becoming a tragedy because of greedy overfishing.

Quota-hopping read about this, absolutely disgusting, another loophole being exploited.

The Fisheries Bill includes the acceptance and continuation of EU owned but UK registered trawlers some in excess of 100 metres – the notorious Super Trawlers - to fleece Britain’s fishing grounds.

This was accepted and mentioned in speeches given both in the Commons and the Lords followed by many versions of “but I still support the government Bill”.

The Government must uphold the highest standards of environmental legislation and ensure that fishing is sustainable for years to come by banning oversized vessels and practices such as Electro Pulse Fishing which demonstrably damages the seabed and fish stocks.

But if regaining control of our waters is to hold any meaning, then the Government must act to ensure that British fishing vessels are truly British and not sailing under a flag of convenience delivering their financial benefits to EU ports.

One such company, which owns several trawlers fishing UK waters is registered at companies’ house London, but the parent company is domiciled in Holland.

It owns 25 percent of the English quota.

In the Bill such vessels have to land 70 percent of their catch in UK ports, for many years many of these companies have abused the rules and angered and frustrated British fishermen.

One such method is to land catch in a UK port, load it straight onto a refrigerated truck and sail on the overnight ferry crossing into Holland.

The catch is then processed the next day in a Dutch factory and the trawler is straight back out to carry on fishing with zero benefit to the British tax payer, fishing industry worker or coastal community.
Level playing field! My eye.

Absolutely no b****y point PM banging on about environment when this is legally allowed. Just a load of codswallop.

Re: Supertrawlers

I didn't believe for one minute all this talk from Boris about going green by 2030 was to save the planet or help the fight against climate change Cinders, same with fishing in British waters. There is certainly an agenda going on here but I don't know what just yet...... Obviously somebody will benefit..
