"A legacy of poor decisions" by the UK before and during the pandemic led to one of the worst death rates in the world, scientists have said.

After UK deaths passed 100,000, Boris Johnson said he took "full responsibility" for the actions taken.

Prof Linda Bauld, public health expert from the University of Edinburgh, said the UK's current position was "a legacy of poor decisions that were taken when we eased restrictions".

She told the BBC the lack of focus on test and trace and the "absolute inability to recognise" the need to address international travel had also led to a more deadly winter surge.

Prof Sir Michael Marmot, who carried out a review of inequalities in Covid-19 deaths, said the UK had entered the pandemic "in a bad state" with rising health inequality, a slowdown in life expectancy improvements and a lack of investment in the public sector.

He said the prime minister had been given scientific advice to impose lockdowns and "pushed that back" - not only in March but again in September and December.

The government also failed to create a working contact-tracing system, did not introduce effective health controls at the borders and still did not offer "proper sick pay", he said.

At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson said: "I mourn every death in this pandemic and we share the grief of all those who have been bereaved.

The Covid death rate, although bad, pales into insignificance when compared to this one.

As PM and head of the government, you would expect BJ to take responsibility. How many other world leaders or even company heads would do the same?

In the 15 years since the Iraq war, there have been 2.4 million deaths recorded as a consequence - has Tony Blair accepted responsibility for these casualties? No he has not. He did his best, and succeeded, in worming his way out any blame.

I suspect that many who died of Covid had health problems anyway, so may have died with other problems.

Don't forget that people have been staying home, not working, not travelling so much, not socializing & many other activities have been less.... which makes you wonder how many people would have died whilst travelling, getting illness transmitted from others, accidents at work or even stress from work causing heart problems.... even sports injuries!

We are all going to die one day & if we know how we would avoid it....but sadly none of us can be sure what will kill us... we just have to wait for our turn!
