World vaccination figures !!

Just over half a billion vaccinations have so far taken place
world wide so far !!
At an average cost of about $15 per shot, ( rough figures ) ?
Thats about $7 billion dollars so far ?
Given that the world population is estimated at least count to be
8 billion that leaves 7•5 billion shots to go! Or in monetary terms
about. $38•5 billion ?
Nearly 2 billion of this population live in extreme poverty on only
$1• 25 a day? If we are to achieve enough coverage to allow us to live
a reasonably normal life the someone is going to have to vaccinate
The 2billion poor people at a cost of approx $28 billion ??
Will George Soros and Richard Branson et Al chip in and start a
fund??
I apologise in advance for the rough figures to any pedants that
may read this !!

Re: World vaccination figures !!

Thanks for the links Zaphod, l also broke my rules and googled
Some info as well??
Funny that lshould post my post yesterday and today it seems
the proverbial has hit the fan across a lot of our media??
From what l have discovered it seems the cover scheme will
need considerable boosting to become meaningful don't it?
For instance, only about 8million doses have been delivered so far
across some 10 countries!!
Nigeria has received the most with 3•9 million doses delivered
so far, This is the most populated. country in Africa?
Let's hope this media attention signals the start of the covax
boost??

It's time that the rest of the world followed the UK's lead with Covax.

Sadly IMHO it's the actions of the EU that have really started the ball rolling regarding restricting vaccines which will inevitably lead to poorer countries suffering.
India for example, the world's largest manufacturer of vaccines, has already followed the EU's suggestion of restricting exports.

In the UK besides funding the research with Oxford which has led to the cheapest vaccine and then letting companies around the world manufacture it under license, we've donated huge sums to both Covax and to the WHO including a £548m contribution to the Covax Advance Market Commitment so far alone.

I think India did the right thing though?
Their need is greater than ours ??
I believe all countries with the capacity should produce their own
vaccines first, but then supply other poorer countries by donating
say 10% of their production to WHO stockpile, ( if this is possible)?
This won't suit the BIG PHARMA Companies thought as the prize of
8 billion doses per annum will then be denied to them !!
And there lies the rub ??

Is their need really any greater than those poor countries which are subscribed to Covax and which are so poor that they have no manufacturing of their own?
India which is (so far) one of only nine nuclear-armed countries?
From billions - yes billions not millions - of vaccine doses they can't spare any?
When countries like ourselves, the USA, Japan and more have financed these Indian companies to expand manufacturing?

AGAIN I suggest other countries follow our lead.
Donate cash or vaccines.
Surely a percentage of vaccines produced can be donated if they don't want to part with the cash to buy some for these poorer countries?

FWIW I think you're spot-on that global pharma just don't want to see potential profits just given away.
It's sickening.

AHA! a partial agreement then at least ??
I believe lndias population is over 1billion so at 2jabs per person
they Do need it all themselves initially??
Maybe their government can afford to donate some dosh ,but from
what l see the people certainly can't ??

India's population is around 1.38 billion DM.

Their Covid vaccine manufacturing capacity was over 3.5 billion per year and has been scaled-up from that figure to who-knows-what?

I find it difficult to believe that all current production within India can be used in a timely manner within India and besides as I said before; India are only copying what the EU started.

I suspect profit is at play more than need at home.
Increase the need globally by restricting supply ..............

Ah l never thought of that, you could be right because the Indians
ARE very commerce orientated aren't they?
when you say they produce 3•5 billion per year, does that include
the the vaccine ???

That was the stated capacity if Covid vaccine production earlier in the pandemic DM, not total vaccine production potential.
But since that figure has changed because of recent and ongoing expansion it's not worth taking this any further because not only is it outdated but finding a current figure is presumably still rising.
