Cartophile

I have always been fascinated by Maps, here is a local one the same age as me, its good the compare such reference points against later versions to see how a place has developed, to accommodate people.

I also love maps, Spitty, but don't have any as old as yours. Pre-Covid I used to like looking at the ones in our reference library and following the way my immediate environs had developed. Quite a lot of the land near me used to belong to the Knights Templars!

I'm a map addict too. And I recently discovered this ...

Re: Cartophile

Yes I like old maps too, the best I have ever seen is Captain Cook's first map of Australia - it was on display at the National Library.

But I have my own guide to a European town I used to live and work in. It's a bit older than me, published in 1914 but full of interesting maps and descriptions of localities and places of interest.

Some of you may have visited the place.

It is a little the worse for wear but OK and all the maps are intact

Re: Cartophile

I had, (probably still have somewhere) a lot of topographical maps from about 40 years ago when I used to go tramping and hunting a lot. Sometimes I actually had to use a compass! I still have a copy of a hand written map from about 1840 of part of the Hawkes Bay area of NZ. Here's the digital copy, the original is in the museum where I worked for about 10 years after I retired.

Re: Cartophile

Don't suppose anyone has a map of the original navigation of the River Irwell, before it was straightened to make the Manchester Ship Canal?

What I find particularly interesting is that the River Mersey, which cuts across the canal, must also have cut across the Irwell.

Thanks. But the canal was built by then, so was looking for a map preceding it. Saw that a partial map sold in Bonhams for around £3k, which is a bit steep for me, but does indicate that they were available.
