Legalise Drugs and Daylight Savings?
At last the composition of the WA Upper House has been finalised with the final distribution of preferences after the WA Labor Party won the lower House in a landslide on the 13th March.
Two micro-parties wanting to legalise marijuana and adopt daylight saving now have a voice on the crossbench of Western Australia's Upper House, despite receiving just a fraction of the primary vote.
The Legalise Marijuana WA Party's Sophia Moermond has secured a seat in the Legislative Council's South West region from 2 per cent of votes.
Meanwhile, the Daylight Saving Party's Wilson Tucker has been elected in the Mining and Pastoral Region after starting the count with just 98 votes, or 0.2 per cent.
It is possible due to preference harvesting deals among micro-parties, where parties take turns in preferencing each other high in one region to boost their percentage of the vote.
The Health Australia Party, No Mandatory Vaccination Party, Greens and Animal Justice Party all preferenced Legalise Cannabis second, only behind their own party.
When they were excluded, their preferences also flowed to Legalise Cannabis.
In the Mining and Pastoral Region the Liberals for Climate, Sustainable Australia, Western Australia Party, Great Australian Party, Health Australia Party and Liberal Democrats all placed the Daylight Saving Party second, as did some independents.
The Legalise Cannabis WA Party only formed late last year but took out fifth position out of the six seats available in the South West region.
