The only way to deal with it is firefighting which unfortunately will result in waste. The only alternative is to let nature run its course which would be a devastating death rate. Goodness knows it's been bad enough as it is.

Right from the get-go I've been banging on about what plagues do to societies based on what has taken place in the past.

Calls for an end to lockdown will probably be listened to --- but sadly this is not the time as will soon be seen. Equally complaining about debt being taken on in order to manage this awful Wuhu Flu is understandable but there really is no alternative other than let it kill most of the population.
MOST !! of the population is stretching the truth somewhat Todgy ??
Possibly 3% would be nearer the Mary??
And after the black plague London went through a major rebirth
of infrastructure?
Unfortunately most money went on new churches etc ?

To start with one needs to move the paradigm when dealing with global finance.

One needs to think not in terms of money but credit. Actually another factor that must be brought into play is the IMF Special Drawing Rights.

This is a notional basket of currencies that allow different currencies have an actual value relative to all others. It came into being to help avoid total collapse of the Western banking system when the American government renegued on the promise given at the Breton Woods conference.

At this stage we need to move to "102" if you want?

UK has only managed to pay back debts from two World Wars in last few years. Likely will be well into next century before these debts are repaid.

31st December 2006 actually so quite a bit more than the last few years but I agree with your sentiment.

If ever. The fallout from this global pandemic is an absolute unknown. Anything could happen. Literally anything.

Britain's outstanding First World War debt has been repaid after the chancellor redeemed £1.9 billion from an outstanding bond – almost 100 years after the war ended.

Labour calls for investigation into PM's remarks

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-56670477

Labour is calling for an investigation after the prime minister accused Sadiq Khan of leaving a "black hole" in Transport for London's (TfL's) funding during a Downing Street press briefing.

Labour has written to the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case to investigate if Mr Johnson broke the ministerial code.

The remarks were made from Downing Street during the pre-election purdah for the London mayoral election on 6 May. During purdah the government is required to limit announcements that might influence the outcome of an election.

In a letter to Mr Case, Labour's Deputy Leader Angela Rayner, said the ministerial code "clearly states that official facilities and resources may not be used for the dissemination of party political material".

Indeed it does:

MINISTERIAL CODE
CABINET OFFICE
August 2019

Foreword by
The Prime Minister

To win back the trust of the British people, we must
uphold the very highest standards of propriety – and this code sets out how we must do so.

There must be no bullying and no harassment; no leaking; no breach of collective responsibility. No misuse of taxpayer money and no actual or perceived conflicts of interest. The precious principles of public life enshrined in this document – integrity, objectivity, accountability, transparency, honesty
and leadership in the public interest – must be honoured at all times; as must the political impartiality of our much admired civil service.

BORIS JOHNSON
6 MINISTERS' CONSTITUENCY AND PARTY INTERESTS

General principle

6.1 Ministers are provided with facilities at Government
expense to enable them to carry out their official duties.
These facilities should not generally be used for Party or
constituency activities.

Use of Government property/resources

6.2 Government property should not generally be used for
constituency work or party political activities. A particular
exception is recognised in the case of official residences.
Where Ministers host Party or personal events in these
residences it should be at their own or Party expense with no cost falling to the public purse.

6.3 Official facilities and resources may not be used for the
dissemination of material which is essentially party political.
..... but then BJ's approved ministerial code has been has been broken by ministers before and no consequences to certain ministers ensued, notably and notoriously by Priti Patel .....
