This is the case that I'm referring to.

Good point on which and see where you are coming from (a shame, isn't it), but in general why wouldn't you teach your children something like this? I have directly taught my son about all sorts of situations that call for safety and respect regardless of where he finds himself.

I didn't teach him this because I expect him to be disrespectful or because I ever expect him to encounter an edgy police officer, but because for everyone's safety (in any country), this is a protocol that everyone should use. I should say that I did the exact same when pulled over for speeding in a small town late on night, a couple of years ago.

This is a chicken or the egg situation. Are we having more of these incidents with edgy law enforcement because of some cultural attribute or change within that profession, or because there is a lack of respect for authority? Both incidents in the last three days resulted because the person pulled over -REFUSED to do as told. What's the deal with that?

Is respect for authority (people or the law) being taught and modeled as well as it once was? New thread time...

Hi

Two different worlds Surfer.

We have specialist Armed Police, our police and enforcement officers do not routinely carry guns.

We have severe penalties for carrying firearms and handguns are totally prohibited except for certain government employees.

We have our fair share of idiotic Police Officers.

Certain Enforcement Officers have blocked car number plates, not to be stopped without the express permission of a senior Police Officer, what you would call a Captain.

Unfortunately some Police think they are above this instruction and do stop, which causes all sorts of problems.

Permission to draw a firearm has to be given by a senior officer, for targeted operations this can be given in advance but must be signed off.

The Australian State or Federal Police are armed but they are not jumpy when they stop a car because the driver is very unlikely to be carrying a gun. Also the driver would call them "Mate" or the name on their badge not "Sir".

The only time I get stopped is for random breath tests and they always call me "Sir" or "Mate" - more often the former but the latter in rural areas.

I think most people respect the police without being afraid of being shot, all my kids went to the Police Citizens Blue Light Discos when they were younger and most towns have a Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC).

If I were black in America I would be terrified of being stopped .
Going through Miami airport is bad enough as an innocent tourist.

The American public, well certainly a growing number of it, have trained the American police to act in an appropriate manner.

I agree. Honestly, I don't know how blacks manage to cope with racist cops. Life can be tough enough without having to deal with prejudice.
One thing that many don't understand about American cops is that they have numerous ways to get people to resist. 1.) cops often don't talk respectfully to "suspects". 2.) once cops get you out of your car, cops lay hands on you. This often triggers an instinct to pull back slightly. Once that happens, cops have an excuse to use excessive force. We often see video of cops beating a person with a nightstick and screaming "Stop resisting" "Stop resisting". Of course, when a person is being beaten, it is perfectly natural for them to try and cover up. Cops see that as "resistance".

I don't know how American police manage to cope with racist Schwartzers without doing as they have to.
