Blood

Having had my first blood transfusion, I was talking to one of the nurses about donors, and she grimaced!

I gave 49 pints of B Rh Negative (quite rare), mainly to the Army Blood Centre in Aldershot. I was on their 24 emergency call-out for ten years, but it only happened once. Their logo is a blood sucking bat! Came over here to the Wight, then stopped stone dead by diabetes 2. grrr

The nurse also gave blood but explained the lack of donors here.

Any views on the lack of donors where you live?

If you don't give blood, then try to - you never know who's life it might save.......it don't hurt, honest.

Re: Blood

I used to give blood as being 0- its universal

However its hard to give when even being perfectly healthy, cant give if had surgery, cant give if been to the dentist, cant give if ,,,,,

And then the meds, some medication preclude you from giving blood

Im hypertensive, have been since `I was a teen, but had to go on long term medication in my mid 20s so had to stop donating.. Even now while my blood pressure is high, its low for me, I still cant donate

So Ive been on the bone marrow list since it started and Im on the organ donor register with my husband and family aware of my wishes if the time comes they have to sign the paperwork

I always wanted to give blood, but I am a bad Diabetic Type 1 on Insulin and you are not allowed, if you are only on Tablets then you can.

Re: Blood

I would have died, as a teenager, if people hadn't given blood. My father regularly gave his too, but as I became a Type1 diabetic in my 30's they will no longer accept mine!

I applaud anybody who takes the time to give blood & you never know when you may need it yourself!

Re: Blood

I was a blood donor for thirty years, but then when I contracted late onset Asthma, the Transfusion service compulsorily retired me. I did get my 'Emerald' badge though for 75 pints!!!

Re: Blood

I've got nothing but respect for those who donate blood. I've been a recipient of blood a few times and know what a difference a unit or two made to my health.

Re: Blood

I donated blood regularly for years, then became a plasma donor. Finally had to stop when I started more exotic travelling because they wouldn't take the risk that I could theoretically have malaria parasites. But they got more than a hundred pints out of me so I guess that's not bad.
