American baskets

We often see on American TV programmes and films, the tradition of giving the new neighbours a hamper as a house warming or welcome to the neighbourhood. I would like to ask our american members if this actually still happens in real life and if so, have the contents changed over the years? Are baked items expected to be gluten free and has wine been swapped for mineral water?

Dunno the answer to that one but I did love their Pot Luck parties.

You might have to PM the Americans Longlegs.
I have received similar gifts of welcome from my neighbours.
The trouble is they always give me red wine. I have a cupboard full!

Re: American baskets

We have never received welcome gifts, thank goodness, nor would be ever consider giving any. I have never heard of that before.

A couple of neighbours gave us a bottle of wine when we moved in which I wasn't expecting and was very nice of them.

Hmmmm?

Perhaps I have been watching the same film non-stop.

C'mon Americans, are you up yet?

Re: American baskets

I had bottles of port and wine given to me when I moved once... think that was a bribe not to come back

I've not left a hamper or anything like that, or even heard of it, but I've always left a vase (or jamjar) of fresh flowers with a welcoming note. More to shut 'em up if they find anything untoward
