Pain killers

Last month i had a tooth extraction the pain was awful as i had a dry socket and an infection i was told to take paracetamol and ibuprofen, it just didnt take the pain away. The pain went after 7 days when i returned to the dentist who filled the socket with wadding.

My friend has had breast cancer she has suffered terribly and last week she left hospital after reconstructive surgery and told to take paracetamol and ibruphen. This didnt stop the pain .

This has me thinking , what does help with pain ? Surely the doctors should prescrible stronger pain killers for intense pain . Is it necessary to suffer for hours and days just taking paracetamol etc

Re: Pain killers

I can’t speak for others Susan but co-codomol is the only pain killer that eases my back pain.

Re: Pain killers

Nothing Susan.

I have tried all painkillers and end up with Paracetamols. All other painkillers make me vomit and giddy.

Re: Pain killers

Hi Susan I think the reason paracetamol, ibuprofen and other NSAIs are widely recommended for pain is because they are not considered to be addictive.

The alternative pain relief medication like co-codamol and similar medications are opiates and addictive and it is recommended that they are taken for no more than 3 days at a time .

I find paracetamol useless for pain, I can't take ibuprofen it is contraindicative with my other medication but I can take codeine which I find effective to some degree.
I have been learning to use breathing and relaxation techniques to help with pain relief.

Re: Pain killers

Never seen a doctor in the UK but I think if you talk to your GP and say that you don't get much from over the counter stuff, S/he should be able to prescribe something stronger. Panadeine forte or something like that. I'm not assuming you haven't tried this but if you haven't :-.....Also a pain management specialist can introduce you to a whole new bunch of ways you can deal with pain. Things like acupuncture etc can work but they are only temporary.

Re: Pain killers

Interesting thank you everyone . I'm very fortunate and am quite a healthy strong person and dont suffer pain unless through injury . I was shocked to hear my friend suffered after her surgery I honestly thought that stronger pain killers would have been given to her .

Susan your friend can go to her GP and get a prescription for a short course of stronger painkillers that will be used under supervision.

Hopefully, your friend's pain for reconstructive surgery will be temporary so she won't have to manage the pain for long. .

Re: Pain killers

Contraversial but I sometimes think they should make medical marijuana legal as it's been proved as good pain relief. Used correctly and under supervision it could give a great deal of relief to people in pain. It's no more addictive than some of the legal drugs on the market.

Obviously it doesn't help in your situation but it got me thinking.

I hope you find some relief, I m very sorry to know you are in pain xxxx

This has worked for me at the moment with my back pain, Mags. Co-codamol are the strongest over the counter tablets you can legally get without prescription. A mix of codeine and paracetemol.
