That is the idea of a forum is it not ? To give your opinion , unlike a referendum where you give your opinion only for it to be ignored if it’s the wrong opinion offered .
After 24 years military doing many things I neither wanted or agreed with but ‘ that’s the task your given so do it ‘! I now find politicians can simply ignore what they are asked to do by the electorate and do their own thing ... 68,000,000 asked and it all comes down to the same unaccountable silver spooners !!!

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

I am amazed at the lack of guts and spirit by many people, no wonder we are in such a mess .

Democracy is only destroyed if people allow it to be by failing to have the courage of their convictions.
I will fight on supporting my beliefs something I have always done throught my life regardless of seemingly hopeless situations.

If there is an election I will support my MP who has done her best to carry through the results of the referendum. I will also tell her why she has my support.

Apologies if you thought I was replying to your post, Marmaduke
My post was in reply to Old Fogey's post but I forgot to include the quote.
I've edited it to include his name now. Hope I am forgiven for the misunderstanding.

Our MPs are traitors

There is nothing they say, nothing they write, and nothing they promise, that can be trusted again

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

If there is a general election, and I sincerely hope that there will be, I have two hopes.

The first is that the newly emerging Independent Group will get their act together, produce a meaningful manifesto, and stand in as many constituencies as possible.

The second is that where appropriate and nesessary voters use their votes strategically in order to keep the Labour party out.

My dislike of the opposition Front Bench is almost as profound as my dislike of Socialism.

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

democracy of sorts? - in kind ? - sort of ? - does it mean for all the people ; by all the people ; with all the people over the age of sixteen!!

democracy I believe fails when you can only muster a 40% turn out at elections or 60% turn out at referendums - and do not have compulsory voting! allowing your elected members to stack the votes doesn't help either - I think the Greeks had a different idea when they invented it

and to a large degree the eligible voters of UK have destroyed democracy

I live in a 'democratic country' where nearly 100% of the population turn out to vote and despite a few screwed up returns we get a high 99% of results - and heh we don't feel oppressed - we feel well governed!

nb: As of August 2013, 22 countries provide for compulsory voting, and 11 democracies — about 5% of all United Nations members — enforce it - wikipedia
