Re: Extended Warranties

I have never bothered with extended warranties, a waste of money, imo.

Re: Extended Warranties

We bought an American style fridge freezer for about £1,000.We tried to negotiate the price given that it was a cash sale - no HP agreement. No go.
The only thong the sales staff would move on was a discount on the extended warranty which we didn't want anyway.

The beast is still going strong 18 years later.

I agree with both of those .....

..... and the "local" advice is good, too - hard water may cause more problems/wear than soft water (luckily, I'm soft) ......

Most electrical goods are well-built nowadays (see Which for Good/Bad Buys) so I haven't bought an extended warranty in over 20 years .....

Interesting to read other's ideas. Thanks everyone.

These insurance companies always try to put fear and doubt into people, don't they, always saying about all the things that can go wrong and what it would cost etc.

Re: Extended Warranties

I can't remember ever buying an extended warranty on anything. When I am offered one by the sales person, I always ask 'Is it not expected to last more than a year then? Perhaps I shouldn't buy it.

Re: Extended Warranties

Waste of money. Most appliances fail very early in their life or very late in their life (it's a bathtub curve). An extended warranty insures an item for the very period when it is least likely to fail.

One thing I was told when I was a very young man was to run every electrical/electronic appliance for 24 hours as soon as I got it home because if it is going to fail early that will find it out. Obviously that is not always practical but if it was possible I always have - TVs, amplifiers, stereos, computers etc and obviously things like fridges, A/C and the like.

Over the years that has proved to be very wise advice, on the rare occasion something did fail because it was only a day old they invariably changed it for another brand new item rather than insist on repairing it.
