First steps

When/why did you learn to cook?

For me it was up to University-self catering and a choice of rubbish or making an effort.

And then the realisation that inviting a young lady back for a meal was half way there as it were.

To cook is to love

Re: First steps

My mum and Gran used to let me help and gradually was given more responsibility so hard to say exactly when I 'flew solo'. However, I have purchased a variety of cook books, seek new recipes from friends and trawl the net looking for new tastes.

Re: First steps

Good thread! When my Mom died when I was 25 I had to take over the cooking; could only do basic things at that point like scrambled eggs, etc. So got out her well worn 1930s Good Housekeeping cookbook and learned from scratch. And got a compliment years later from my Dad which I still cherish; he said I was as good a cook as my Mom! Later, as I got really good at it (as I say so as shouldn't ) and enjoyed it I branched out into other cuisines, Chinese, Thai, Italian. Food and cooking are important to me.

Re: First steps

I learned to cook when I was a lad, . . we all used to go camping and we had no choice but to cook for ourselves.

Re: First steps

I first wrote some recipes down when I was preparing to go to Uni. But only really recently 'started' to learn to cook properly
