There are many types of volcanos. One of the more famous, Mona Loa in Hawaii is not one of the explosive types; she "merely" releases red hot magma, which seldom stops until it reaches the sea. An explosive type, due to the sulfurous gasses which built up, is Mount St Helens, in SW Washington State, which last erupted in 1980, and which I had the good fortune to watch from my balcony.Re: Volcano erupts

For those people interested in learning about what a serious monster volcano is capable of, look at what the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa did. The blast was heard over 3,000 mile away, ruptured the ear-drums of sailors 40 miles away and put so much sulfur-dioxide into the atmosphere that 1884 was known as the year without a summer. It actually snowed in many parts of America on the 4th of July.
