Exactly! UK law forbids boris (or any british pm) from requesting an extension. Of course UK law has no effect on barnier's actions.

Couldnt google tell you that?

Google told me: In October of that year, at the behest of*US President*Chester A. Arthur, 41 delegates from 25 nations met in*Washington, D.C., United States, for the*International Meridian Conference. This conference selected the meridian passing through Greenwich as the official prime meridian due to its popularity.

So it was an american initiative to set the naught in britain. Seems a bit uncharacteristic for an american, until you think: who wants to be A naught? Certainly not an american.

I have a very vague memory of the French attempting to set up it's own meridian. Found it on Wiki. If you look at the attachment, you will see that the Paris meridian is a couple of degrees east of Greenwich, which means that, at 12:00 noon, the actual time in Paris is closer to 12:20 or 12:30 and not 13:00, which is Central European Time (run from Paris).

Poor Assman that was true a century ago but no longer. The meridian is not accurate enough hence GMT has been replaced by UTC. Google it.

So Britain is observing GMT now? Oooops! oh no, it's an hour out for summer. Time can and is manipulated to suit local conditions and it makes a lot of sense for the UK to be on the same time as other European countries.

Hi bruce, don't know how many timezones australia has, the EU has three. Returning to wintertime won't help, all EU countries do the same. The UK keeps logging behind in time.

GMT is the old standard time in the UK. During the period between the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, we add one hour and go to British Summer Time (BST). As for adding yet another hour and going to what has been disparagingly called "Berlin Time" was tried for 2 or 3 years about 40 years ago but there was a terrible increase in road accidents and deaths that the experiment was cancelled. Not only that but it meant that people in Scotland were moaning about the very short length of day in winter. In the end, we were, generally, very pleased to abandon the whole idea.
