Re: Magpies

The only downside to them is they steal eggs from other birds nests.

Re: Magpies

They are beautiful birds. We have one who nests in a tree near our garden and has been visiting us for titbits every year for the past 15 years. We call him "Clacker" because of the distinctive noise he makes to let us know he is around. He is getting to be an old bird now, and each year we wonder whether we'll see him again. Our magpies seem to coexist with the rest of the local bird species, although they are all coming under increasing pressure from the huge flocks of Green Parakeets which are growing seemingly uncontrollably.

Re: Magpies

I always used to worry when i saw blackbirds because as a kid we used to sing the song one for sorrow two for joy..... and they seemed to be few and far between.
Now there seems to be loads around, must be this is one species that is growing in numbers.

Re: Magpies

I agree that they're beautiful looking birds - but they're murderous! Last year, I watched a magpie after a fledgling thrush which the parents were trying to defend.

The result was inevitable - and gruesome...........

Re: Magpies

Its not nice when you see this type of thing Alice B, its just a shame they are such beautifully looking. This magpie now comes to our garden everyday. Mind you our cat has tried to get it a few times.

Re: Magpies

We have a pair that come down into the yard and tease Dageus most days. They always keep just out of his reach.
If he's not out they make such a racket to get someone's attention to let Dageus out to play.
