Re: Hot chestnuts /in london ,,,,,

Used to go up to London as a kid to see the big shops and the lights.. There was a man at the end of the strand who sold hot chestnuts.
We used to buy a little packet in a newspaper cone and they kept our hands warm while we waited for the bus home.

I still cook them at home and I know that they are very common in German Christmas markets.

Hot chestnuts are very popular here too, they are sold on almost all the markets.

I remember them at things like the Nottingham Goose Fair and recently at the Victorian Christmas markets which are held in Worcestershire .

I cook chestnuts at home every winter, I cook them in the microwave these days, pierce/put in a dish/cook for a few seconds.

They have a lovely distinctive aroma but I do remember when roasting them if you were not careful , they would explode and I do mean explode. Quite scary but made you laugh once you had recovered from the fright.

All part of the wintery crimbo scene
