Neither was St. Andrew a Scot, he was one of the Apostles. He's also the patron saint of Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Bulgaria and a host of others.

[QUOTE=Uncle Joe;1137491]Yes but it would have a lot more meaning and relevance if the person were actually British or at least had some connection with the British Isles. The present 'patron saint' had neither!!!

Re: St Georges Day

"King Edward III made him the Patron Saint of England when he formed the Order of the Garter in St. George's name in 1350, and the cult of the Saint was further advanced by King Henry V, at the battle of Agincourt in northern France."

The stories say he was a very brave man and he was chosen as our patron saint 667 years ago. These days we wouldn't chose Patron Saints for countries, but I don't understand why anybody can't accept that the king of England, in 1350, chose him to be our Patron Saint and he has remained so ever since. Why try to change History?

I have no control over, nor want control of whosoever the Scots choose as their 'patron', but I do have strong objections to having the Catholic Church foist one of their 'saints' on us, without so much as a 'by your leave', when the person chosen has not the slightest connection with the country.

Perhaps you should have complained about it in 1350, when he was chosen, then!
You will never have control of it UJ, so why not just accept it!

Considering that the `church` was all Catholic until the Reformation (1517) no-one would have had much say in the matter or would even question the decision.

Will you two please stop this.....why you'd want to confuse him with facts is underhanded....a devious tactic.

Sorry Tpin I had forgotten that communist minds deal with fairytales, not facts.

King Edward III - did no such thing, George was already 'our' patron saint - chosen by the catholic church, Edward merely re-inforced it, in deference to the catholic church. As for Henry V, Shakespear's play did wonders, but were the words reputedly spoken by Henry real or merely imagined by Shakespeare to embellish his play???
