Touch screen monitors - what's the point?

This is probably a stupid question but it's been nagging me for a while, here goes.
There was a TV ( 21'' I think) advertised at Aldi recently, cheap enough I suppose, but it was the latest model with a 'Touch screen' operation. My question is, what is the point of touching it with sweaty fingers when you have a remote control?. My computer screen gets dirty enough just sitting there without me touching it. Is this technology tripping over it's self?.

I too don't like the idea of touch screen for that reason. The grandchildren are under strict instruction not to touch the computer monitor screen. Also, it must be quite awkward to use in a Desktop setup. I'd need very long arms in order to touch the monitor screen from my normal sitting position. Maybe it's more suitable for laptop computers.

I haven't examined a computer that's actually using touch screen though. Perhaps the surface is easier to clean than the surface of a non touch-screen monitor.

I agree with Mart - I don't really see the point in a desktop environment, it would just give you arm-ache!

However it is very nice in a portable device like a tablet, where it's harder to use a mouse.

I use a microfibre cloth on my iPad screen - one swipe over and all the finger marks are gone immediately.

Just one more gadget to break or never get used. It does get us out of our chair and keep moving. I don't know about a touch screen though with my arthritis. It hurts me to even zip up my fly. LOL

I suppose you could then use the on-screen keyboard. I tried that but couldn't seem to find a way of hanging the keyboard on the screen.
