Look out! It looks as though sparks are about to fly!
How about this for a title ….”Chief negotiator in charge of leading the Commission Taskforce for Preparation and Conduct of the Negotiations with the United Kingdom”. Phew! What a mouthful. Don’t envy the signwriter who has to fit that lot on the office door !
This is the title given to Mr Michael Barnier, 65, chosen by hardball Juncker to go up against the Eurosceptic MP’s. He is already well known as the” scourge of the City” and now the EU’s chief negotiator.
This post will infuriate Eurosceptics as Barnier is well known as a hardline federalist but he is the one Juncker has chosen to lead talks on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU from October.
Apparently he has repeatedly clashed with the City of London after he curbed banker’s pay (good on him) and infuriated Mervyn King when he was the governor of the Bank of England.
In 2011, Sir Mervyn let fly at him during a row when Mr Barnier threatened to rein in the governor’s new powers over Britain’s banks.
Mr Barnier refused to back down, which caused Sir Mervyn’s voice to get louder.
An hour later, Sir Mervyn’s hands were still shaking when he sat down for lunch with George Osborne, the then Chancellor.
It is well known that alarm bells will already be ringing in the City. as it is believed that by choosing such a person as Michael Barnier, it is possible the EU could do illogical things during the negotiations because of their fear of contagion.
Michael Barnier has already had run in’s with our EU withdrawal negotiator, David Davies when they were both European Ministers in the 1990’s.
Mr Barnier ,previously vexed British Ministers with his calls for more financial regulations when he held the post of EU commissioner for internal markets and services, between 2010 and 2014. When he was handed the post, President Nicholas Sarkozy bragged that France had achieved a victory over “Anglo-Saxon capitalism”. During his time in the job he issued around 40 proposals that rewrote Europe’s rule book for banks, markets and insurance. He was dubbed “the most dangerous man in Europe” for his anti-City regulations.
Well, it looks as though we are going to have one hell of a fight on our hands over Brexit. In the blue corner, David Davies, in the red corner, Michael Barnier.
Who is your money on?? Bring it on Barnier, The one thing Juncker and Barnier forget is that we have voted to come out So this time no-one will be rolling over to obey any rules and regulations and skullduggery dreamed up by the both of these long-winded Eurocrats with their new fancy title on the office door!
