Well done EU (again!) - Mastercard faces £14bn card fee claim

A £14bn legal claim has been filed against Mastercard on behalf of UK consumers seeking damages for anti-competitive card fees.

In 2014, the European Court of Justice ruled that regulators were right to condemn the cost of its interchange fees - the fees retailers pay banks to process card payments.

Mastercard lowered its fees but now faces a claim for damages for 16 years of charging from 1992 to 2008.

It has vowed to fight the action.

Puzzling if the retailers paid the fee why would customers be entitled to a rebate

Not just someone trying to get their hands on some easy money then? Why did many people sign up for a Mastercard in the first place when all the the terms & conditions and charges were clearly laid out?

That is good news Azz, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my share of the 13 billion we're getting from Apple.

More work for the European Lawyers. I sometimes wonder if Europe is making a bid for policing the world and its affairs. They seem to be trying to extend their powers into every aspect of our lives. Sooner we're out the better.

It don't really matter where the Quantitative Easing comes from, provided it does, that goes for wherever you come from.

i’m not very political minded Azz, but from what I can gather it’s about 50/50 for and against, half the people are afraid that tens of thousands of jobs will go if the multi nationals pull out of the country, and that could happen if Apple have to pay out this money, the other half are saying we should take any monies due to us having had seven years of sever austerity slapped on us for bailing out the bankers, the people haven’t even started to recover from that yet.
It’s at a bit of a standstill at the moment, the Irish government want’s to appeal the EU’s ruling on the grounds that it has no right to interfere in our own tax laws, and that Apple understood our tax laws before they set up here so they (Apple) did nothing illegal. although they are not all agreed on this appeal thing in the government, it’s a very shaky government at present and could fall apart at any time, the whole thing will be tricky and take a lot of time to sort out in my opinion.
