Headphones

Can someone tell me why earphones/headphones are ear specific. Do you not hear the same things through both ears?

Because they are stereo but I suppose it doesn't matter for music but if you are watching a movie on a tablet for example if they are in the wrong ear then the sound travels in the wrong direction ie a car you watch travelling left to right sounds as if it went from right to left - you soon swap them over.
