I think that demonstrates that even naive socialists eventually come to realise that socialism just doesn't work.

We have proved that many times: whenever the Loony Party gets into power and the magic money tree runs out, the economy is trashed.

I suppose that some people are just a bit slower to realise than others.

The EU hasn't snuffed out any cultures. Last time I checked Spain was just as Spanish, Italy just as Italian, France very French in their cultures and traditions.

The countries in the EU had a choice to join, the countries in the British Empire did not, they were taken advantage of in quite an underhand way.

So on the one hand you have the EU which is inclusive and embraces all the different cultures without suppressing any, on the other hand the British Empire that forged a path through the World insisting that British culture was superior to all others, that the British language is best.

Even before the Empire the same view was applied. Did you know that following the Act of Union the Welsh were forbidden to speak Welsh and were forced to speak English? Schoolchildren were beaten for speaking their own language.

So on the one hand you have a democratic European Union that countries have freely joined and on the other the British Empire which basically took whatever wasn't nailed down. (or took it even if it was!)
Why single out the British Empire? What about the many conquests of Spain, the French, the Germans and even the Italians and the Dutch who have all exploited different countries for their resources at the expense of those countries?

Of course you are right. But perhaps the UK finds it the hardest to give up their colonies. 10 of the 17 recognized non-self-governing-territories are under UK administration.

Because she's one of those people who despises Britain.

Funny how she still lives here, though!

Another comparison we can make between the British Empire and the empires of other countries is to look at the countries who were part of those empires.

Canada, India and Australia/New Zealand were all part of the British Empire and are all rich and thriving countries, especially India which is now among the top few economic superpowers in the world.

The Spanish Empire: Mexico, much of South America.

No comparison really, is there?

I wonder why that should be?

Because we are British and it is our history. Realist is pointing the finger at what he considers the flaws of a current empire. Let's look closer to home and see how we compare.

Not at all. I simply despise the hypocrisy of some of the stuff I see posted here.
