Actually, it is a fairly well known saying.
I think it originates from Ovid, and it was worded something like this:

"parva leves capiunt animas"

I can't remember much Latin now but it has various translations, such as
"frivolous minds are won by trifles" or
"little minds are captured by trifles"

or the more everyday version we used as kids

"Little things please little minds" ...

As I remember the common retort when someone said this to you was
"... while bigger fools look on"

Not to be outdone, the original insulter would respond with
"... in sympathy"

I don't think Ovid wrote those last bits, though - but I've lost count of the number of times my siblings and I exchanged those insults at primary school level.
