They can "help themselves" - after all they take a vow of celebacy don't they ? That is a decision that they make when they enter the church - so why can't they decide to resist their paedophilic impulses ?
I noted the words this cardinal actually used - 'Paedophilia not criminal condition' says Durban cardinal - he is attempting to fudge the issue.
"Criminal condition?". A person is either a criminal or not a criminal and paedophilia is a crime which is punishable in law - therefore, committing acts of paedophilia is a crime not a condition. As has been said paedophiles go to great lengths to remain undiscovered, which surely indicates that they know what they do is wrong and they fear punishment. It is not good enough to say they cannot help themselves when they have the ability and need to cover up their actions. They show great control and deviance when they fear they may be found out. If that is deliberate then so are their paedophilic activities.
I wonder if because this criminal activity is within the church under an umbrella of authority and power, they feel somewhat protected from the outside world and the law and maybe it has become so endemic in the artificial lives that male catholic priests live that they do not regard it as a serious crime - and can accept it easily because it is commonplace in their world. I think this must be so because time and time again others within the church "cover up" and protect these criminals - just as if they are in some untouchable club which is beyond the reach of the law.

Rena darlin' - you've touched on the very issue which taxed the minds of both Henry II and Thomas Beckett, whether clergy 'caught' doing acts contrary to common law could be punished by that law or whether as Thomas beckett maintained, the clergy were subject only to Canon Law.

Obviously that issue has long since been resolved by the application of common-sense, but the mind-set of the 'church' in general is still back in the 13th Century.

Re: Paedophiles can't help their actions!!!!!!!

I recall a horrendous crime in Toronto years back where a child was stalked, raped and killed. The killer spoke of being aroused by child porn on the internet. There was no mention made of him being abused in past. Had he never been exposed to such material, would he have developed such sick fantasies and acted upon them?

Absolutely agree with that Annie, as do 'Kidscape' and NSPCC...

Re: Paedophiles can't help their actions!!!!!!!

What I cannot understand is how saying you were abused as a child gives you an excuse to try it yourself.
I was mentally abused by my Dad as a child, but this made me extrememly determined not to let it effect me and not to do it to my children or anyone elses. In fact I turned it around to be a helping, caring person which I feel I still am.
I understand sexual abuse is maybe worse than mental abuse but you can turn it around and when you consider they are innocent children it makes my blood boil.
I agree with UJ and think they have got away with it for so long they felt immune. A bit like Savile who had buddies of his who also did the same. All these Priests know each other or will when they do this deed so they stick together. Pity they cant round them all up and drop them from a plane in the middle of the Atlantic all together.

It seems they just move the troublesome priests from one parish to another.

Are you suggesting Napier is a paedophile?

Clearly the thought had crossed his mind, as, given what the Cardinal said, it crossed my mind too Willow darlin'. Only time (and a thorough investigation) will prove whether our suspicions are right or wrong.

There is little more that I can add to what has been said and I agree with every word.

I don't care how he chose his words there can be no excuse for the sexual abuse of children. I find his words abhorrent and I hope he is dealt with swiftly so the message can be sent out to those abusers within the church that their behaviour will not be tolerated. He is also excusing those abusers who are not of the church. Disgusting.

Every one has a choice of how they conduct themselves. They know they are breaking the law but worse still they are breaking a child.

Re: Paedophiles can't help their actions!!!!!!!

YES they do need help, they have often been abused themselves or/and there is a hiccup with their genetic make up.

HOWEVER THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE THEM. We may all experience a desire to...... whatever your delight might be. BUT we recognise that this is wrong and do something about it!

SADLY, I know that many cannot help themselves and if there are people out there who cannot stop themselves abusing in any shape or form they need to be treated.
What form the treatment takes is another thing......?
