They may need help Su - just as a gambler, alcoholic etc - but it aint gonna happen. Adults need to clean up their act and set a moral example, otherwise 'nothing' is ever gonna change, the longer depravity is promoted, the longer abuse will go on.

Here's a thought then Soul DJ - Given that the lives catholic priests live dictate celibacy and that they also live in a largely male environment - would it be an idea for them to volunteer for chemical castration when they choose to enter the catholic priesthood? It seems to me that what they are never allowed to use and don't intend to use then they don't need and it would make their lives far simpler. Catholic priests could then concentrate fully on their holy devotions and serving the church/god without sexual distraction/temptation.

These predators are not just within the church they are in all walks of life and maybe chemical castration should be the punishment for all those found guilty of that terrible crime.

It could be a solution for the ones who can't control the urge to abuse children and any priest who has a conscience should consider it. I can't see any reason why other priests would want to take that option.

If paedophiles can't control their tendencies then I can't see how allowing them to marry would help the situation, they're obviously not attracted to each other ( or are they?) or they'd just bugger each other, allowing them to marry either a male or a female wouldn't stop them desiring children, would it?

The fact is that if it became legal to marry underage children in the UK - as it is in many other countries - these men would be committing no crime. Laws change over the years; homosexuals were criminals until about 50 years ago, now they seem to have become "icons" and hilariously outre. As for priests, it's sort of similar to men in prison for life who have sex with fellow prisoners. They probably were hetrosexual on the outside, but as someone pointed out, if you're in an all-male environment and that's your only choice ...

Would not make one iota of difference Carole - lots of married men are predators - as for marrying young - most children are 5 to 7 years when abuse starts.....As for priests, whats abusing children got to do with it - if you cant live without sex - dont join the priesthood ! Or allow them to marry yes, but it wont stop child abuse, they rely on the child 'not' speaking so its about 'easy prey'

Yes, of course they are, my point was that sex with underage girls is only a crime here and at the present time. In Saudi or Africa it's the norm, however distasteful it may seem to us.

As for allowing priests to marry to curb paedophilia, how does that work? Two different desires there.

Chemical castration is already happening in the UK. 100 child sex offenders have undergone voluntary chemical castration in a Nottingham prison, under a government scheme. Chemical castration is mandatory for child sex offenders in Poland, Russia and in some states in the USA. Apparently it can reduce re-offending from 40% to 5%.
