The legal bills for future committments/pensions etc come to between £7bn and £9bn, this will be fully honoured with payment in the event of a no-deal. So if the EU then decides to get bolshy and refuse trade to the UK, it will be shown up for exactly what it is. a corrupt, bullying dictatorship, who will have a struggle to explain to the world of it's actions.

Re: It's Official! We don't have to pay the £39BN.

The 39Billion has always been suspect since the early days
that so called negotiations began when the initial estimates
of the proposed bill were, if l remember correctly, between
80 & 90 billion, which dropped almost overnight by approx
50% to the current amount of 39 billion!
A good example of what has been going on since France
condescended to allow uk to allow uk to join the club?
Imv blatent extortion and profiteering etc!
We will be well out of it if those sort of tricks have become
common practice in eu dealings??

Of course you can leave the bar without paying, but as a defaulter you cannot come back for another drink. If the UK leaves without paying what they are due, they cannot come to negotiate a trade deal post brexit. Barnier has said as much months ago.
On the amount due I even started a thread: beware if hunt claims etc.

It's also enlightening to read what the UK said about this issue exactly a year ago:

It's not a default because our foreign aid we pay the EU isn't part of any credit agreement or borrowing arrangement.

In fact come to think of it... what exactly are our tangible benefits if EU membership????

You must be prescient!

Boris Johnson*is on course*for a major row with Conservative Brexiteers after Downing Street admitted*that he is only seeking*changes to*one part*of the current*Brexit*deal.*

No10 said the prime minister was only asking the EU to remove the controversial Northern Ireland backstop, which would keep the UK in a customs union with the EU if no other way is found to keep the Northern Ireland border open after Brexit.

Mr Johnson has said*that the current deal, negotiated*by Theresa May,*is*”dead”, but the admission that he is happy with the vast majority of the 585-page agreement will infuriate Brexiteers.

Asked whether the prime minister*supported the current deal if the backstop was removed, a*Downing Street spokesperson said: “We have been clear that the changes we are seeking relate to the backstop.”

She added: “The PM has had good*discussions*with EU leaders both last week in France and Germany and at the weekend [at the G7 summit in Biarritz]. There is a clear understanding now that the commitment*to leave on 31 October is absolute and that the PM*wants to do so with a deal.

Things seem to be heading towards a TM style last minute
U turn by Boris!
He is definitly leaning towards resurrecting the thrice rejected
WA but with the required substantial amendments to allow
POSHOC to reconsider passing it this time?
If he succeeds in this he could well garner enough support
for him to survive future divisions in POSHOC?
If he manages this it will also weaken Nigels position imo?
So many options? What a state to be in!

I have heard this matter of "debts" bandied about quite a lot lately. However, I have yet to hear any details of why we owe any such "debts".

What exactly do we owe £7 billion for?

Can it be for the infrastructure in Brussels and Strasbourg we have contributed to?

Can it be for the many rules that have been imposed on us?

Can it be for our contributions, financial and scientific, to the development of the Galileo project that we shall have no use of after we have left?
