Re: Post your daily exercise routine

I've given up exercising until the Spring. The weather is cold and miserable and health safety outside is questionable. I can't seem to discipline myself to exercise indoors because it's a bit boring. All in all, I'll join the ranks of the unfit for a while and hope to start walking/riding when times are better.

I might take a leaf out of your book now I'm getting older and not training for anything Mart.
You take your life in your hands trying to run on snow covered and icy roads these days and just one fall could result in the end of a sparkling career.... Or even death....

I can't seem to find the motivation to go to the gym (our gyms are open for now) I keep getting up with good intentions then I realise how cold it is outside and I just can't bring myself to go.

I really need to push myself, I've come so far with my fitness I really should carry on.

Mart and LQ, I completely understand the weather being a challenge. I am terribly wimpy when it comes to wanting to face several miles with a cold wind in my face and I am spoiled when it comes to climate. OGF puts me to sad shame when it comes to persevering in cold and wet weather .
.

I admire you, Mart for having the fortitude to start over in the spring While it might not seem like it, I have a propensity to be lazy and not sure I could start from scratch every year. When the weather is cold, I depend on a few hand weights and a mat to do exercises - mostly in front of the television. There are some very good videos on Youtube, but you get no argument from me that once you've been outdoors, other "venues" seem boring by comparison!

And with that I am donning half of my closet for a chilly run.

Re: Post your daily exercise routine

There are a few reasons for stopping exercise. There are the ones already mentioned but also, having spent years riding (mostly) with others, there now isn't anyone to go out with. They have either died or become not fit enough anymore.

I did start to go out for organised walks with a group but I have a medical condition that means I can't stick to definite start times (doesn't affect energy levels). I need to set my own outdoor hours. I had to stop going out with them for that reason. Those walks are cancelled at the moment even if I could take part.

My brother, friends and me used to be a prod for each other to get out in the bad weather but that's gone now and I find I've lost motivation. I also have a niggle that people aren't being careful enough with Covid. Another factor that keeps me indoors.

I've seen what can happen to others who have tried to stay fit into old age. Age got to them in the end anyway and it makes me wonder what the point of it all is. If enjoyment is got out of exercising, that's a good reason to do it but perhaps no point if it's considered work. I don't think exercising necessarily makes a person live longer.

I hope the return of the nice weather and more confidence with being near to people will see me getting out for brisk walks and bike riding again. Another factor though. I'm 76 and feel I've made old bones even if I were to depart this mortal coil now through being unfit.

Age is always going to get us in the end mart, but I intend to keep my mobility for as long as I can, losing mobility is a slippery slope on the way to boxed sets and the sofa. I just accept less and keep away from the sofa....

Long distance running is a lonely hobby, and apart from the time when I ran for a club, I've always run alone anyway and now I wouldn't thank you for any company. A bit of me time with mother nature being the only distraction.

Funny you should mention box sets. I'm just going look through Netflix to see what long series I might fancy watching next.

Edit: Don't mind me. I think it's this last year that's got to me as well.

Between lockdown and bad weather it's hard to stay focused mart. I'm sure once the weather picks up you will find it hard to resist the urge to go out into the sunshine. And remember, the sunshine is Covids worst enemy...

Re: Post your daily exercise routine

Mart, I really appreciate your perspective on your current situation. I am hopeful for you, as well.

I am a bit envious of people who can walk, cycle, run, etc. with others. Strangely enough, outside of surfing, I insist on exercising solo. It's about the only time I have to clear my head and not think about the needs of others. I protect that time fiercely.

The topic of aging and exercise could well be the most important topic on this forum. It is a blow to one's our sense of self to yield to sinister time. The endeavor becomes, as OGF mentioned, is how to retain mobility, maintain cognitive function, and the enjoyment of activity without injury. I plan to try to stay as fit as I can not for the sake of fitness, but because of the pleasure it brings me - serenity, energy, and the wonder and joy of nature - wind, sun, cloud formation, wildlife, plants, activity- is what I crave most. Striving for fitness still fills me with all that wonder.

I already find myself looking down more than I ever did to keep from tripping and surfing fewer and fewer days when the surf is big or storms are stirring things up too much.

There will be a last day that I will pop up on a board, hop on my bike, or lace up my running shoes, but I remind myself that it was a privilege to have so many years of each. Even more, I know that activity has probably given me more healthy years with my friends and family.

Your fitness quest is one we all share, Mart. I suspect that you are a lot happier and healthier you than you would have been without all these years of activity.

In the meantime, I hope you find something to watch that is binge-worthy!
