Cancer patients being treated with outdated equipment

A survey has revealed that many hospitals are using cancer treatment machines which are long past their shelf life.

Many are over 10 years old, some as old as 15 years.

Advances mean that the more modern machines can pinpoint treatment to the actual tumour.

Older machines deliver treatment not only to the tumour but also to surrounding tissues, causing unnecessary damage to the patient, which is especially dangerous to those with a tumour near a vital organ.

Machines are not being replaced due to costs, with some costing £1,500,000.

As Hospital Trusts are more intent on balancing their books it appears that there is indeed a price put upon the quality of life and treatment.

It is a dreadful fact that during our lifetime the majority of us will encounter cancer in some form or other so this scandal affects us all.

Give our dedicated and respected cancer treating staff the tools that their expertise deserves.
