Acer Palmatum Dissectum seeds

Nearly forgot - yesterday at a stand that had some BEAUTIFUL Acers my wife asked someone there about the flowers as ours has flowered for the first time ever this year.

He got all excited and said "Save the Seeds and plant them!"
so we've harvested all these little winged things - really tiny they are - and I've planted them in fine seed compost and they're upstairs in the warm front bedroom!

Hope we get some going like the parent plant as it's now about 15 years old and gorgeous.

My wife had to drag me away from that stand - then the Grasses! stevmk2

Hello Mags, sorry about the delay!

Our Acer is about 15 years old now because I'm sure that it was at least 4 years old and we bought this one when a very late frost killed off our A. palmatum "Bloodgood" and that was 1998 - we use to keep a hand-written log then.
This one's A. palmatum dissectum "Rubrum.

Our friends up the road also have an Acer which is at least 10 years old and theirs has flowered too!

We must be very lucky 'cos the bloke at the Malvern Show on Saturday said as much! stevmk2

ANDREW NORFIELD..
You might be interested in contacting this chap who specialises in producing germinated tree & shrub seeds.

THey are kept sometimes for years to scarify (mature & weather them) & he then sells them as they sprout. I believe he is unique. I had some eucalyptus from him , plus some acers & they all thrived in my garden.

Bit late now Robert - I've already sown them!

I'm hoping I might just get one success though - that would be fine and I'm prepared to wait a while too! stevmk2

Re: Acer Palmatum Dissectum seeds

Since harvesting some of the seeds the other day our tree has suddenly started to produce more flowers - and it looks like some of the small seeds we didn't bother with have got bigger!
Wonder if it's responded to our harvesting?! stevmk2

Steve, are you able to take a photo of the flowers? If so, it would be interesting to see, I've never seen an acer in flower before...
