Advice needed please

I need a tall plant, preferably colourful that won't damage house foundations. The border isn't very wide and I never have any luck with clematis, although I love them. I think we're too dry in summer. At present I have a Fremontodendron but I'm worried about the roots so it has to go. Its in a sunny sheltered spot. any ideas? All help very gratefully received. I'll even give you a nut at Christmas.

Why not put a couple of big containers there? Then you can grow azealeas etc.

Re: Advice needed please

I wouldn't get them in, the water butts are in the way. Thats another reason for the tall plant to take the focus away from the butts and wheelie bin. So I can't have anything prickly either and a cotoneaster is okay I've got a couple elsewhere in the garden but a bit boring. Thanks for the suggestions though, where is Mr. T when you need him.

Nandina? Winter jasmine ( can get a bit leggy)? Forsythia ... trite, but lovely in flower? Camellias ... depends on your exposure...sheltered?

Re: Advice needed please

I have seen a climbing fuschia for sale, anyone grown this? I love winter jasmine but unless tightly clipped it flops everywhere, although its a sheltered spot its a very small space, ivy would be ideal if it didn't root in and not know when to stop.I've also seen a perennial scented sweet pea too, I think I might investigate that further. Forsythia is beautiful, I've one in the back garden, no wonder its grown everywhere. My neighbour has one and it lights up the whole street, just what you need after a long dark winter.

Re: Advice needed please

No I didn't but will now. in fact I love the smell of honey suckles, I know they can be a bit messy but I'll get OH to put up some trellis for it to cling on to, or wires.
I've also looked at abutilons, they go on flowering forever. Thanks everyone for all the help, I think I'll go for a honeysuckle and grow annual climbers through it. The birds love honeysuckles so another bonus, I do try and grow for the wildlife.
