More EU greed with Horizon research funding

Another example of EU greed comes as the Horizon 2020 research programme morphs into Horizon Europe.

The Horizon programmes is a collaboration of research and innovation between "European" scientists.
Note please that the EU purposely calls it "Europe" and not "EU".
Well fine - the UK is in Europe, right?

Well yes sure - except the EU in effect want us to cough up £3 billion for the "privilege"!

"“In order to receive an equivalent to £15bn in receipts, we need to win 16% of funding from the programme. We currently will win 12.7%, so that implies that even if we continue to participate at the current level, there would be a net contribution over the life of the programme’s seven years at about £3bn. Now, even we think that doesn’t look fair, and we’ve been saying to our European counterparts.”

Is this another example of EU intransigence; another example of EU willingness to shoot itself in the foot?
Such discrimination harms both sides (and the wider world) because the UK are recognized globally for their innovation, which this programme is supposed to promote.

Re: More EU greed with Horizon research funding

There you have it Zaphod. If the EU can put any hurdle in the UK's standing any sector, including Science Research etc now that we are a sovereign state, they will. Not for nothing has the UK always been referred to by the EU as Treasure Island, they will use every means at their disposal to wring extra monies out of us, especially where something as important as Horizon Europe is to the UK.

I sincerely hope the UK gives them a good slap and puts them in their place.

Well, if it is true that british scientists are so creative, they will easily expand those 12,7% to 16% or even more.
But it is also a means to promote british research institutes and draw talent from over europe to them, at a price.
Nobody forces you to participate, it is a free world.

It is indeed a free world but you're making it sound one-sided - and it isn't.
It as a means to promote EUROPEAN research institutes and draw talent from all over Europe into them.
Promoting a culture of unfairness is unlikely to encourage participation.
And that unfairness certainly isn't going to encourage British participation - and as a nation widely-renowned for innovation that will surely harm the success rate of other European institutes.

It's almost as if the EU would rather see us increase cooperation elsewhere, like the far east & the Americas.

BTW, the Japan/UK trade deal has been signed in Tokyo.

Your previous assertion that UK actions might have a consequence there have, as usual, been shown to be so much hot air.
