It seems to be already in hand.

"Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, said: "Shipbuilding has historically been a British success story, and I am determined to revitalise this amazing industry as part of this Government's commitment to build back better."
And:
"The Integrated Review is understood to be considering changes to EU-derived rules that prevent the UK from prioritising domestic firms as part of a push to boost the UK shipbuilding industry at the end of the post-Brexit transition period."

Interesting.

As I understand it, the EU rules that no-one can build their own naval assets and, consequently, (quote) we use Swedish steel and buy French missile launchers.

I have a simple question.

What do we build for other EU countries?

(Incidentally, the writer of that article made a mistake. The Harrier isn't exclusively used by the US Air Force; it's used exclusively by the US Marines.)

Of course, I strongly believe that we should immediately put in place what we need to build our own ships (and other defensive systems). We have a long history of shipbuilding and, as I'm sure I have mentioned before, in the 1950s and '60s we were world leaders in aircraft design and production. Rolls Royce still holds that position regarding aero engines.

Could be wrong, but, the harrier went out of active service a while ago.
Haven't read back, so, could be barking up the wrong tree.

The answer to your question JBR, is probably, not much?
Mainly due to ,soon after joining the EEC. in order to take advantage
of the bigger market? We then proceeded to destroy 90% of our
manufacturing capabilities when Thatcher decided to deindustrialize
our economy!! Thus making us unable to exploit the opportunities
that membership was supposed to offer?
You are quite right that we were at the fore front of aero-engineering
with probably more independant plane & plane engine manufacturers
than even america has?
I totally agree with Shroppie we should start our ship building again
using our defence requirements to give it a start !!
I only hope we have retained enough skills to do this as we have
been languishing for some time now??

No, the US Marines still use them, but they're due to be retired in 2025.

And to think that our wonderful government gave them away when we really could have still been using them even now.

The american marines did buy a few but soon after, the yanks were
bringing out their own designs ??
I dont know if any patent rights were involved??
Now we have just bought a shed load of them from them, for our new
air craft carriers???
Talking of which we did actually build, l believe !!

Hi

Not the EU, our own stupidity.

Yes it is down to not only our Free Trade mad Politicians but also our Civil Servants, of which I used to be one.

There is an absolute get out, strategic industries, which everybody else uses except us.

Countries build their own.

We are the stupid ones.

There is no way at all French or Polish warships would be built by the Germans, that is simply not going to happen.

Re: Treat This As Priority MOD!!

The UK was once an independent powerful nation, then they joined the EU and over time the country became a puppet at the hands of other EU nations. Now the UK is leaving the EU, the EU are worried that the UK will once again become a powerful independent nation and if that was to happen, it would create a domino effect of other countries wanting the same for their nation thus the unravelling of the EU. Brussels is not about to let that happen because they want control, they don't want to give control back to individual nations again.
