5p bag

We've now, since 20th October, to pay 5p for a carrier bag when shopping. Fair enough, I'll use a sturdier bag to take with me each time. Apparently Asda in Dundee have had to put security tags on their baskets, as folk are pinching them, obviously not wanting to pay the 5p. Beggars belief.

Re: 5p bag

We don't have that down here yet, wouldn't affect me too much as I take a bag/bags with me but I wonder about home delivery - many products are double wrapped in carrier bags or just one item per bag. I would be unhappy paying for 10 bags when 2 would do the job !

Count yourself lucky if you like using bags…here they charge 22 cents!!

(Haven't used one for years, though.)

I believe they have it in Ireland too. I wouldn't mind paying now and again, but it would irritate me to keep forgetting to use the bags next time. I'd never dream of stealing a basket though!

I don't think plastic bags should be available in stores anymore, even if you have to pay for them, we should all be expected to bring our own.

Agreed. It's not that difficult to keep bags/boxes in the car or take them with you when you walk/get on the bus/train etc. But I guess they make a nice profit for the supermarkets too...

Depends what you are buying though, don't fancy not being able to wrap flowers in a bag - drips aren't pleasant, or a chicken/meat sometimes needs an extra wrap to stop them contaminating rest of shopping. I like one for tumble dryer sheets and cleaning stuff too or the smells permeate my bags and make everything taste horrible.

Re: 5p bag

I don't have a problem with charging for bags I take my own and both Waitrose and M&S have a policy of exchanging torn bags free of charge and the thick plastic ones last for ages anyway .

But what if we forget to take the bag - do we just juggle our food on the way home

Fair enough, but why can we not all take our own bags? Plastic litter is a real problem.
