Spelling particularly in newspapers

I don't claim to be best speller in the world but I do wonder does anyone proof read newspapers these days. Reading an article about Downton I spotted 4 gaffs biggest one being they claimed it was aimed at gentile people, now either they made a mistake and meant genteel or we have an anti Jewish programme which I find odd since we have some Jewish characters who are head and shoulders nicer than the upstairs characters we normally have.

So why don't they check their spellings ?

I know what you mean, Julie, I get really annoyed with the spelling mistakes - can make all the difference as to whether a sentence makes sense or not!

Do proof readers exist nowadays?? Probably not..

Perhaps even the proof readers canīt spell. There are very many spelling mistakes in news articles on the internet, some can obviously be put down to transposition but there are many spelling mistakes. Perhaps people donīt bother these days.

I used to know a proof reader a few years; well knew of her. She was my bosses wife. She couldn't have got much work, because she had to take a PT job in Tesco.

Saying that, on the TV this morning, the News reader said:

I'd written it down, she should have said, I wrote it down.

Re: Spelling particularly in newspapers

Several years ago I spotted an advert in our local newspaper in the items for sale column - "Holiday caravan for sale, Sighted!".....

Should have gone to Specsavers! Obviously!

How many times do you hear people say 'president' when they mean 'precedent'?

Re: Spelling particularly in newspapers

My partner has just done some proof reading for an author, so some people do still use them.

Yes, it does surprise me when it's a newspaper or the like. It seems to make it "poor" somehow............
