Can I have a tortoise?

Are we allowed tortoises in Britain?

Should I buy two for the kissing/and for friendship?

Will her cat kill my tortoise?

How about sea monkeys instead? Probably in a year or so I will get my dog - needs to be large enough to defend against 25 year old male. Suggestions?

Re: Can I have a tortoise?

Matchu, if you are serious, may I suggest before you make any decisions, that you do your research and find out all these animal's needs first.
You might find there is more work involved than you thought in suppling what is necessary for their health and wellbeing.

For a start, tortoises would need some sort of enclosure in your garden, plus housing and a variety of food.
The seller also has to be licenced to be legal nowadays too. I am not sure whether you would also need a licence, you would have to find that out.
Then is the facilities for winter hibernation they would need.

Sea monkeys I know nothing about.

Regarding a dog, I did not understand what you meant about ' being large enough to defend against a 25 yr old male?' Sounds like you want some kind of fighting dog!

Have you had dogs before?

Sorry, but I find this a very strange post.
If you are serious, could you explain more please.

I don't think they are legal any longer in UK. Almost certain there is some law against owning them or importing them.

You can own them Puddles, but you need the correct paperwork to go with them, these days.
This is why I suggested Matchu did his homework first.
I believe they are also very expensive now too.

Quote:

" The Ban on Tortoises

In addition, many tortoises that were once popular as pets are now listed under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and are also covered by additional, EU-wide, legislation which controls sale, transport and possession within Europe.
This means that you can no longer import, sell or trade tortoises in any way within Europe without a special permit. This can make locating a captive-bred tortoise quite difficult (never buy a wild-caught specimen and do not attempt to bring one in from overseas) although joining a tortoise organisation, such as the Tortoise Trust, can provide you with good specialist advice, listings for reputable breeders and even information about tortoises that need re-homing.

" If you do find a good, captive-bred tortoise in a reptile shop, make sure that it is sold with FULL DOCUMENTATION as otherwise you may be unwittingly supporting the illegal trade in wild animals. "

Up until around 2012, my Mum had several tortoises in a little group, I think there were about 5 of them.
I remember her hatching some of the eggs in her airing cupboard. The baby's are amazing, and only about 1" big.
The babies need a special heated vivarium for the next couple of years.
A friend took them when Mum became to ill to look after them any more. To my knowledge, they are still alive and going strong to this day.

It's also this dog who will have to defend itself that worries me. Defend itself against what or who?
Please explain, Matchu.

Neither animal sounds a good choice IMO.

Re: Can I have a tortoise?

I'M NOT GETTING A TORTOISE.

All my life I've kept worms and snails. I should really be allowed to keep a dog like every other old person and now that the children have fled.

Although umm might organise some kind of militia re the 7.30am beach dog walking crime wave..
