Julie, My poodle always came back shaking after the groomer so l got my own professional Aesculap clippers to groom him myself. It was a bit nerve racking around his face but l managed it!

Awww Arty, you would love Bichons, they are of the poodle family, curly haired and don't moult. Bichons are such funny, comical and hilarious little buggers and have some real funny traits. I adore my Kodi, he can be a stubborn little sod at times but he's adorable. Kodi is 12 now and I'm starting to realise how old he is becoming, I can't bear to think of life without him but obviously one day that will happen. I'd definitely have another bichon, I keep saying I wish we had two but John doesn't want two so I didn't go on about it.

Re: Why Are Mongrels So Expensive?

you could go for a biscuit hunter

Highly intelligent, they will get you trained very quickly. Fantastic little dogs. i can put you in touch with my manager that i had, she is really into them

see PM I sent if interested . Teazle is one of hers. you could not go to a more knowledgeable person of the breed. you don't trim ,them but the hairs need what is called stripping to get rid of the old coat every so often

The Rescue people did admit after, that they had no history for him and he had been returned a few times.
We had no history for Max either. He was picked up as a stray. It was his gentle demeanour that appealed. But we had to be seriously vetted before the rescue centre would let us take him home.

I don't know if all rescue centres do that.

The bottom line is, they are still mongrels and that’s why the Kennel Club won’t recognise them.
It took a long time for the kennel club to recognise Jack Russel terriers too.
I would get a rescue dog every time, most are very loving & want to please after being rejected. We have had two, first one a Spaniel type, the second a Border Collie type, both cross bred & very loving. I am too old to get a dog now though.
Rescue kennels usually make sure a dog is suitable for the home it's going to, if they are any good that is.

Max, our collie, is like that too. He wants to greet everyone.
But not everyone likes dogs. Fearful even.

Max avoids those. And cats.

Re: Why Are Mongrels So Expensive?

This so surprising to hear these comments. I stress I have never been a pet owner in the UK. Never even looked after a pet when I was there. But "mongrels" and mix breed dogs are very popular here. Many of them are Aust cattle/ Lab mixed with other breeds which seems to be a really good combination. Unless of course there's dingo or some other tearaway breed there. You can usually tell if there's dingo because they are very aloof and hard to socialise. The breed we had got the intelligence and boundless energy from the cattle and the gentleness of the lab. That was our last dog and he was a total gem. Our current little guy is a similar mix although he has staffy and Huntaway as well. They were both rescue dogs and both cost us under $500 with all shots, desexing and other stuff squared away. The other side of the coin is that pet ownership rules are pretty strict here. No knowledge of those in UK.

Re: Why Are Mongrels So Expensive?

Art, these cross breeds are so expensive because people keep buying them!
While folks keep paying these silly prices for crosses, others will keep breeding them.

I wouldn't be put off a rescue just because of what happened years ago.
You haven't got small children now - unless you have got very young grand children at home, have you? But reputable rescues should help you sort this anyway.
In fact, many reputable ones won't even let a dog go to a home with small children in the first place.

Have a browse through this link, see if it gives you any ideas.

https://www.poodlenetworkuk.org/rehoming-services

Failing that, have a look at Dogs Trust below:

https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/our-centres/

I couldn't help you search because I don't know which area you are to put in the search box, so you'll have to do that and find the nearest centre to you.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
