How to clean a Steam Iron

To clean a steam iron, fill with equal parts of white vinegar and water and let it steam until dry, it will need rinsing a few times and then jet steam a piece of old cloth until nice and clear.

Re: How to clean a Steam Iron

Can also use lemon juice. Of course, if like me you live in a soft water area this is not necessary cos there is no build up of limescale to deal with. But if you do have the problem the same method ie lemon juice or vinegar works on kettles. Oh, and if you have cooked fish in your microwave and the smell has lingered, then a little lemon juice and water in a suitable container, heated and allowed to boil for a minute or two will kill the smell.

Great idea. Will do the lemon juice with my kettle.
I wonder if Bicarbonate of soda would also do the trick?

Maursey I always use 'white' vinegar for kettle cleaning its fab and so quick.
Pour in vinegar and top with water, you only need to half fill the kettle with both. Leave to stand for 30 mins, rinse out then half boil and rinse. Job done, comes up like new.

Thank-you for the tip. My iron does seem to get a little crusty.

If you own a dehumidifier or a condenser tumble dryer do not throw the water away as it is good to use in the iron.
