Organ Donors

What are your thoughts about the idea they hope will become law in the new year, about compulsory organ donorship?

How will it work?
How will we know if we are down as a compulsory donor or not?

They say people will be able to 'opt out' if they wish, but where do they go to do that?
Will it be on forms sent to us, or a questionairre at the GP's?

I think they are right in the way it will create many more available organs, but I am not sure how I feel about it being compulsory.
What about you?

Re: Organ Donors

I use to carry a Donor card , when that boy Ben needed a transplant , there was a big surge for everyone to carry one ..
I tore mine up when i found out that body parts are stored for years .
I shall opt out ,and make my wishes known ..

But I wonder how we would do that, Eliza?

Re: Organ Donors

Personally, I think it's a step in the wrong direction. Instead off allowing people to make an altruistic gesture and donate their organs voluntarily, this gives prospective donors hardly any say in the matter. Will people now have to carry an `opt-out` donor card to prevent their organs being stolen? (because that's what it amounts to). What then will prevent someone's organs being harvested on the pretext that an opt-out card couldn't be found?

I think the whole idea of compulsory organ donation is just sick.

Re: Organ Donors

It's not being made compulsory at all, anyone can opt out. It's just changing the idea of opting in to out. Many people opt in but their organs are wasted because they don't have a card on them when they die.

Re: Organ Donors

Personally I hate the idea of giving organs even though I would be dead and know nothing about it. My worry is that people who choose to opt out will be made to feel guilty about it.

Re: Organ Donors

It depends if we can choose which of our organs we would give up and which we wanted to remain in place after we die.
