The Italian cruise ship disaster.

There are about another 4000 people who will say no to cruises from now on.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

The inquest on this tragedy has already begun. Apparently both the Captain and his first Officer abandoned ship long before he had ensured everyone else was safe. It is reported that he emptied the ship's safe of money and valuables and fled ashore.

It would seem that the Italian merchant fleet do not adhere to the 'Birkenhead' drill as the British merchant fleet were taught.

Joe, where did you get your information from?

I have read several reports and the only mention of the Captain was his comment about the water being navigable and his attempts to get the ship closer to land.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

I see folks are already crucifying the captain and the first officer without any substantial evidence so far.
As far as I read it the 'black box' is still on board the liner and the cause of the tragedy is far from certain.
It is the dead and missing who should be the number one concern and of course their families.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

I just read that.....
captain, Francesco Schettino, said that the ship hit a rock that was not on the charts and that he had tried to save as many people as possible..
He faces possible charges of multiple homicide and abandoning the ship before all the passengers were rescued.
......he "approached Giglio Island in a very awkward way, hit a rock that stuck into its left side, making (the boat) list and take on a huge amount of water in the space of two or three minutes," a prosecutor told reporters.

Island residents also said the ship was sailing far too close to Giglio and had hit an underwater rocky reef that was well known to inhabitants of this hilly outcrop.

The Costa Concordia, which ran aground on Friday the 13th, was regarded as a cursed ship by superstitious Italian sailors, after the champagne bottle failed to smash when it was thrown against the hull for its christening ceremony.......
Whatever the reasons for this tragedy, surely the buck stops at the captain.

Absolutely Janela darlin' - the Captain is ultimately responsible for everything that happens aboard ship under his command. He should not have abandoned his command while there were still passengers and crew at risk of injury and/or death. This is not the first Italian liner that has foundered and the crew were the first to abandon the ship instead of the last as they should have been.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

Lets not bother with any trial then, just execute the skipper.
He probably is as culpable as you lot are implying but whatever happened to due process?
