Work

Do you welcome work (if you still do) and, do you fear it's extinction?

I fear it's extinction. The Ai revolution will mean a massive change to those in developed countries. People who moan about migrants doing our jobs will be moaning about robots doing our jobs.

Re: Work

That's nothing compared with what is currently being planned. Many back office jobs will be disappearing as well as elements of professional jobs. Only last week there was a press release about some AI programme that can diagnose eye diseases just as well as or better than medics.

I am a retired electrical engineer. What I have seen that has reduced jobs in not AI but electronic communication. As an example water pumping stations were individually manned. Now one person can monitor a number of them from a central location. It doesn't even have to be geographically close. As far back as 1992, we had equipment in a switch room 200 miles away that we could control from our office, monitor all sorts of things, analyse alarms and error messages. It didn't need any local operators to do that.

Sure, if there was a component failure, we'd need someone to replace that but we already knew what spares he would have to take.

Re: Work

I work in for a very large local retail and distribution company strong history. We specialise in supplies for the construction industry, health and safety, workwear clothing and health and maintenance supplies, mostly to businesses. We are very busy and our turnover is pretty high, the company doing well (so they inform us).

But I do see my particular firm struggling to keep up with the internet, of which we severely need to up our game in compete with the big players such as Amazon.

As far as "welcoming" work, I do in the sense that it keeps me in a job and I have to do my time as I'm nowhere near retirement age - nor do I wish to be just yet.
But on the issue of whether I'm happy and satisfied with the job I do, no I'm not but most of my reasons are to do with my own financial state. I work nights for the extra pay and can't wait to sort all that out within the next two years. When I am financially secure, I hope to pack this line of work in for a daytime job doing something I really enjoy.

When I reach 60 I want to be working at least part-time.

Re: Work

My main job, dispenser or pharmacy technician as it now is will soon be obsolete.
I hated it but there were some worthwhile bits, mixing medicines, ointments etc. now it's so easy I don't know why you would need qualifications. They don't even count tablets!
Soon you'll put a card in a machine and your meds will pop out!
It made me laugh when I offered to help out at my old surgery when they had no dispensing staff. My qualifications were out of date. In other words I couldn't pick up a packet and print a label from the computer!

Re: Work

I work when I want.
Mostly online reviewing research.
I do go out into the field, I have to.
At least I never have to retire.
I would be bored.
