Talking Pictures TV - The Naked Civil Servant (1975)

On tonight:

22:00-23:35 Mon 25th May 2020 90m

Biographical Drama. Directed by Jack Gold. Stars John Hurt, Liz Gebhardt, Patricia Hodge. Based on the autobiography of Quentin Crisp, who lived as an openly gay man in an intolerant era.

Quentin was way ahead of his time and so was this movie. A great cast and superb script made me, and many others, see homosexuality in a completely different way.

IIRC, the "ballet teacher" was the first major screen role for the lovely Paricia Hodge .....

An excellent programme and very well played by John Hurt. I shall be recording that.

More info for those interested:

he film was based on Quentin Crisp's 1968 book of the same name and, as well as being directed by Jack Gold, was produced by Verity Lambert.

Surpisingly not a BBC production, the 77-minute television film was produced by Thames Television for ITV and was originally broadcast on 17 December. John Hurt won the BAFTA for Best Actor in 1976 and the production also won the 1976 Prix Italia.

In 2000, the film was placed fourth in a poll by industry professionals to find the BFI TV 100 of the 20th century, and was the highest ITV production on the list.

Quentin Crisp was an inspiration. It was he that said, "No need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dust doesn't get any worse." And he was quite right.

His book is well worth reading and I remember enjoying the film (a long time ago).

Re: Talking Pictures TV - The Naked Civil Servant (1975)

Well, I got round to watching it at last .....

Surprisingly, I had the same reaction as on first viewing - initial aversion, gradual immersion and final approbation .....

One of the then-unknowns I spotted was Roger Lloyd-Pack, as Bermonsey Liz in the cafe at the beginning .....

I imagine that the production would be too heavy-handed for today's taste but, at the time, it was revelatory and the "eccentrics" a delight .....
