Percy,

I would suggest that it is not a person that is talking to you.

It a a recording.
The spammers set these calls up to ring hundreds, maybe millions, automatically.
All they need is an answer, and then they know that you're active.

If you make the response which they request that response can be coded to do nasty things and they might try all sorts of things after that.

Best bet, I suggest, is a call blocker.

Letting the call go to your answering machine (if you have one) can still be a problem as the answering machine "answers" the call.

Sorry if you knew all this.

Have you checked with this, Percy?
I use this quite a lot.

Thanks for the link Mups. I've entered the numbers I got from 1471. For everyone's info these numbers were: 01565 590923 and 01565 404268.

Re: spam

You're lucky!
I often get around half a dozen spam emails a day - I have thirteen in my spam folder at the moment - ever since I made the mistake of having a research paper published a few years ago.
Fortunately, my Gmail account is very good at recognising them and sends them straight to my spam folder, which I usually empty every day.
They used to annoy me at first, but I just routinely delete them now. I takes only a few seconds.
It's no good writing to them and asking them to stop. They'd just laugh behind your back that you've confirmed that their spam is getting through!

Thanks for the numbers Percy. I just checked too, and it said they are from the Knutsford area didn't it.
You could always check again in a day or two, and see if there are more reports made.

Like Ted said, if you have a phone where the calling number shows on a small screen, best not to answer it, sort your call blocker out instead if you can. Good luck.

I get the same JBR. As a retired Industrial Scientist (with a specialism in Rubber Technology) with about 30 presentations published internationally, you can imagine what MY spam box looks like every day

Cheers Mups, I'll have another crack at it tomorrow if they start calling me again (they've only called 2x today).

Re: spam

Percy,

I think that you will find that those numbers have been faked up to make it look like the calls come from a respectable area.

Probably some Ruskie has doctored, even purchased, those numbers to make the scam calls seem OK.

Re: spam

We get phone scammers on our landline too, using fake UK numbers. I still report them to OFCOM, 1471 gives the exact time which helps. You would think in this day and age there would be a way of tracking the origin of these calls.
We are registered with the TPS but that doesn't stop calls from abroad where most of them seem to come from.
Recent ones have been pretending to be from BT Openreach, telling us we have problems with our internet etc but yesterday's call was a recorded message, female with an American accent telling me my Amazon Prime account would be automatically renewed and to press 1 if I wanted to speak to an account manager. I don't have Amazon Prime, they don't have our home number so I told the annoying machine woman to go forth and multiply and hung up
Annoyingly as I was in the middle of something at the time I forgot to do 1471. It was probably the same lot that rang Percy!
