Nationalisation of GPs

At a time when we are increasingly having problems accessing an appointment - telephone or otherwise - with our GPs who are viewed by some as hiding themselves away whilst hospital staff do not have this luxury, is it time to think again about making GPs part of the NHS?

Apart from anything else, surely our health services should be designed around need. The places with the oldest people and the highest levels of deprivation should get the greatest resources. At the moment practices emerge where doctors want them to be, rather than where public health needs assessment tells us they should be.

Your views, please.

Privatise the lot. All of the NHS. It's well past its sell by date and now is just a political lever.

How would the poor cope with that?

Those on benefits?

Exactly, Pauline. God forbid that we ever get to the stage where we are asked for proof of medical insurance before we are asked what ails us!

In the same way that they cope in other countries, especially Switzerland.

Re: Nationalisation of GPs

Complex social-political-economic issue. Way beyond me, but I'll have a quick stab.

I would love the GP system to be part of the NHS. Pressure on GPs would be decreased. Appointment durations would be increased. But more GPs would be required, so the taxpayer would need to pay more.

Big corporates would foot most of the tax bill. But the big pharmaceuticals' profits would be decreased, which means that research and development would suffer. So there would be fewer drugs developed and released, which means life expectancy could be decreased.

It's all very complex, but I would like to see the GP system incorporated into the NHS because then GPs would stop making excuses about not being able to syringe my ears!

Re: Nationalisation of GPs

General medical services ( GMS) is the range of healthcare that is provided by general practitioners (GPs or family doctors) as part of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. The NHS specifies what GPs, as independent contractors, are expected to do and provides funding for this work through arrangements known as the General Medical Services Contract.

That from Wiki!

As I understand it, the modern GP is just a guy on a Help Desk.

If he gets a query he/she warms up the PC search Engine and looks for the possibilities.

That's why they are always facing the screen when you go in.(if you get in!)

Once he/she decides the most likely option, they set you up to visit the real Specialist in whatever.

I always thought GP's were a part of the NHS?
And they get paid by government on the size of the practice?
IE. Each doctor gets fee from government for every patient he has
on his books that gets treatment from that doctor in that year ?
But each doctor has the right to treat privately alongside his poor
patients?
But that was years ago before they bastardised the NHS with
these local so called "trusts" ?
It seems to me that rich people think they are subsidising poorer
people's health and have been trying for some time to alter things ?
In the beginning they had seperate private suites in NHS hospitals
but whether this still prevails l doubt due to the proliferation of
private health facilities now ?

There's more than a few hard up people in Switzerland and absolutely no evidence of Nazi gold stored in secret bunkers.
