Is the world running out of chips??

I saw a report this week that Jaguar , land rover were suiting their
factory this week for a couple of weeks due to a lack of computer
chips
Then today l saw that Ford motor company in the USA are also doing
the same thing for the same reason?
Is this shortage global ?
If so what are the wider ramifications of this and can anything be
done about it ??

The problem is one of supply and demand.

No shortage of raw material, but instead of fabrication time and yield from a production run. Then there's the number of types and testing of the dies from wafers containing many "chips" through the various stages to encapsulated individual devices.

Nothing 'fishy' going on here though! It would seem that this crisis applies to many car manufacturers, something to do with first cutting orders of the computer chips from China and this then affecting production when orders picked up better than expected. Those who supplied the chips could not keep up with demand. This is what happens when cars become almost laptops on wheels!

More information on this shortage, which is reckoned will last for six months.

"The boss of networking giant Cisco has said the shortage of computer chips is set to last for most of this year.

Many firms have seen production delayed because of a lack of semiconductors, triggered by the Covid pandemic and exacerbated by other factors.

Cisco chief Chuck Robbins told the BBC: "We think we've got another six months to get through the short term."

What with the problems in the UK fishing industry and now a shortage of 'chips' it would seem that way DM.

However, no shortage of gained knowledge when my curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out more about exactly where the silicon chip, as we know it, starts out. For anyone who wishes to know more, the link below answers that question, it's quite interesting too:
