Brombil reservoir: Margam residents angered by visitor influx

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-56933584

People are visiting Brombil Reservoir in Margam to post photos on social media, Neath Port Talbot council says.

The council said it does not promote the reservoir, which is privately owned, and had recently painted double yellow lines along nearby residential streets.

But these measures have been "ignored" by some people, or had the effect of moving the parking problems to other streets, it said.

The "huge rise" in visitors had also resulted in increased litter, including dog fouling, the council added.

Give morons an inch and they'll take a mile .....

Beautiful place though......People need to have their vehicles confiscated and have to get there on foot. That would thin them down a bit.....

This reminds me of the residents of Stoney Middleton, in Derbyshire, who are up in arms about Tom Cruise filming a £150 million movie which will involve a huge train crash stunt in their picturesque local quarry.
They are concerned about all the wildlife being destroyed as well as the descent of 250 production staff, let alone fans descending on the peaceful area too.

I didn't know that, Foxy. Sounds like it may all be for the same film then.
He's never appealed to me, I'm afraid, always seems rather a cocky little bloke to me - sorry.

It's the same up here in the very North, we were overrun with people last summer. Parking where THEY wanted, doing the toilet where THEY felt like it, trashing our much loved wee places and leaving a dreadful mess for US to clean up. Not all visitors are like this but a hell of a lot are and we simply don't want their kind here.

Here too sans the bathroom issues.

As crazy as it sounds, we started a program of Beach Ambassadors in which we "niced" people into stop trashing the area.

Businesses, the police, the city councils, the tourism department, and the local real estate companies work in conjunction with the police to put ambassadors in jeeps, four wheelers, and bikes, all with wraps and flags of "Leave only Footprints," with the goal of education and outreach. We put ambassadors on the beaches, and even updated a few ordinances to make enforcement easier.

The locals and local businesses saturated the town with business signs, road signs (on busy weekends and holidays), etc. essentially sending a nice but firm message of zero tolerance. There isn't a rental place in town that doesn't have a brochure and a "Leave No Trace" magnet. If you buy something from a local business, there is a big "Leave no Trace" sign by each register.

There were a lot of naysayers, but it worked! In 2016 167 tons of unwanted items and trash from the beaches and trails, and by 2021 it was down to 3. Still a lot, but so much better!

We made taking care of the area CULTURAL and those who didn't respect out culture UNWELCOME.

good mixture of public education and a softly legal stick approach - seems a good way to go? - I don't think any ONE techniques does the trick
